The Greenhouse Competitiveness and Innovation Initiative will reimburse up to 90% of expenditures to a maximum of $168,000 to commercial greenhouses in Ontario with at least 20,000 square feet of production area. The objective of the Greenhouse Competitiveness and Innovation Initiative (GCII) is to increase sector competitiveness, by providing broad-based support that fosters innovation and investment in the sector.
The Agricultural Adaptation Council (AAC) is responsible for allocating GCII funding, and will work collaboratively with the commercial scale greenhouse sector in Ontario to achieve GCII objectives.
Eligible activities include but are not limited to increasing energy efficiency (using renewable energy, upgrading greenhouse cover materials, etc.), improving growing systems and infrastructure, improving waste management, first time implementation of a sales and marketing plan, or research on first-time crop production in Ontario.
The program will not pay for ongoing operating expenses, construction and land acquisition costs or any regulatory compliance expenses. Maximum funding is calculated at $0.14 per square foot of applicant production area (e.g. a greenhouse with 60,000 square feet is eligible to receive up to $8,400). Expenses may be claimed for costs incurred between March 23, 2017 and September 30, 2019. The final deadline for submission is September 28, 2018 or until all funds have been allocated.
